Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are plant, animal, or microorganisms that have been genetically altered or modified in a laboratory. While genetic alterations happen in nature through crossbreeding, lab altered organisms create more targeted changes through inserting genes into individual cells. This process is commonly used in agriculture for producing plant products such as soybean, canola oil, corn, and fruits and vegetables like potatoes, apples, and papayas. The benefits of genetically modifying crops can make crops more disease resistant, improve their nutritional content, and result in more plentiful harvests. But the cons of GMO crops are that they hurt small time farmers by taking away from their profits. GMO crops can be grown much more quickly and efficiently than natural farming processes, meaning local farmers can’t compete. Additionally, many GMO crops require the continual use of herbicides, which can create chemical resistant weeds that may harm farming practises in the future.
Should GMO Foods Be Labelled?
The safety of GMO foods has been put into question by consumers and scientists alike. As of today, multiple experts agree that GMO foods don’t pose any adverse health effects because of how they are made. However, it’s difficult to say if GMO foods may cause any long-term side effects in the future. Regardless, many consumers believe they have a right to know how their food was made. Those who oppose this view state that because GMO foods don’t cause any more of a health risk, they shouldn’t have to be labelled. But for some people, it may not be about avoiding potential health side effects. Many people choose non-GMO foods to support small farmers and protect the environment. It’s important for consumers to know where anything they buy comes from, especially what they put into their body. Fortunately, in 2017, the US government implemented a law that requires all grocery products to be labelled if they are GMO. The effect just went into law on January 1st, 2022. All food products that contain GMOs must be labelled as BE (bioengineered).
